Cataby Power Station proposal

Reliable fast-start power to meet demand around the clock.

We’ve begun work to develop a 400 MW gas-fired power station north of Perth to deliver on-demand and fast-start electricity to the region.

New gas-fired generation will be critical as coal-fired generation retires, providing vital backup for renewables and maintaining secure supply during periods of low renewable energy generation.

The proposed power station, operating 20% of the time, could supply power to roughly 150,000 homes annually. It will be designed to be hydrogen-ready, so we can transition to hydrogen fuel in the future, as we decarbonise energy in Australia.

We’re aiming for the project to be constructed and operational by 2027, but until then check in below to find out more.

Where will this project be located?

We’re proposing to build the power station on Mimegarra Road in Cataby, about 150km north of Perth in the Shire of Dandaragan.

A range of factors make for an ideal location, including not being located on environmentally sensitive areas, being away from residential areas, road access, and being close to natural gas supply and transmission connections.

Why use gas-fired power?

Gas-fired power stations can start within minutes and operate efficiently even at partial capacity. In addition, solar and wind energy can be inconsistent due to weather conditions, while large battery systems can address only short-term drops in generation.

The proposed power station will bridge larger gaps, ensuring a reliable electricity supply for homes and businesses.

Steps to operation

Here's an indicative timeline for the project.

Potential benefits

Skills and training
Local skills and training

A variety of skills and trades, including civil and earthworks contractors, electricians and more will be required during construction.

Workers
Local jobs

Once operational, the power station will provide local employment opportunities by requiring an ongoing team  to operate. Additional contractors will also be needed for routine maintenance the site.

Community
Benefit sharing program

A community benefit sharing program will be developed in consultation with the community. This will provide support for local initiatives and activities.

Where can I find out more?

Currently, the proposed project is in early development, and we are undertaking environmental surveys to investigate its potential impacts. We want to keep you informed on the project and value any comments you may have, even if we’re still at an early development stage.
