Audit your home's energy use

You could find ways to save money.

We'll admit it. It's probably not the most exciting thing you'll do this year (or even this week). But a home energy audit - which uncovers the appliances and areas that may be spiking your bills - could help save you money, and that's a good thing, right? These eight questions will get you started.

1. What does my past energy use tell me?

Check your bills from the past year to understand your energy use. Do you get a spike when you're running the air-con 24/7? Or maybe that big party made all the difference? By getting to grips with your usage patterns, you can find changes that make sense for you.

2. Are my heating and cooling systems working correctly?

We can all agree: being too cold or too hot is less than fun. But heating and air-con are energy suckers, so it's worth making sure they're working well. How? Schedule regular services, and get any issues fixed immediately.

3. Is my hot water system running efficiently?

Low water pressure. Hot water running out quicker than usual. Hissing sounds in the pipes. It's not just a recipe for a miserable shower - it might also be a sign that there's a fault with your hot water system. Jumping on any issues will save you money in the long run.

4. Are my appliances using too much energy?

Past-their-prime appliances can really spike your bills. Your to-do list: regular servicing, deep cleaning to remove dust or debris, and - if you're looking to upgrade - choosing an appliance with a high energy-efficiency rating.

5. Does my lighting need updating?

Do your lights and lamps use older-style light bulbs? Work out what can be switched for energy-efficient LED bulbs. Outside, update your lighting with motion sensors and solar lights.

6. Where is my home losing heat?

Detect a draught? By discovering where warm air is escaping, you get a cosier home - and can cut unnecessary energy use. Pay close attention to cold spots around windows and doors, and find ways to seal any gaps.

7. Can I upgrade my insulation?

Effective insulation reduces heat loss in winter and prevents your house from getting too hot in summer. Check what kind of insulation you have in your roof, walls and floors, and consider whether you need to bump it up.

8. Is everyone in my home being energy savvy?

Who left that light on? Is now the best time to run the dishwaher or washing machine? And are you making sure you have a full load before you run it? Get everyone to play their part in managing your home's energy use.
